Set a guard over my mouth, O Lord;
keep watch over the door of my lips.
Do not turn my heart to any evil,
to busy myself with wicked deeds
in company with those who work iniquity;
do not let me eat of their delicacies.
Translated here as delicacies,
לָחַם or
lacham means to devour.
But it is most commonly translated as to fight or do battle.
Evil can be delicate, delectable, it appeals to deep desires.
Evil promises to fulfill our longing, even as it deepens our addictions.
Evil enthralls, evil flatters, evil entices.
Psalm 141
